Sleeping in a Silk Road Caravanserai: Staying at the Sheki Karvansaray Hotel, Azerbaijan

If you’re looking for a truly unique place to stay in Azerbaijan, it doesn’t get much better than spending the night inside a centuries-old Silk Road caravanserai. The Sheki Karvansaray Hotel (also known as the Sheki Caravanserai Hotel) is easily one of the most memorable accommodations in the country – and honestly, one of the most atmospheric places I’ve stayed anywhere.

Here’s everything you need to know before booking your stay, plus what it’s actually like to sleep in a historic trading inn.

Why Stay at the Sheki Karvansaray Hotel?

Set inside the Upper Caravanserai in Sheki, this hotel offers something you won’t find anywhere else: the chance to sleep in a restored Silk Road inn that once hosted merchants and traders traveling across continents.

When I visited in September 2023, I spent a night here and it quickly became one of the highlights of my trip through the Caucasus. There’s something special about walking through those heavy wooden doors and stepping into a space that has barely changed in centuries.

A Brief History of the Upper Caravanserai

Caravanserais were built during the 18th and 19th centuries to accommodate traders moving along the Silk Road. While many people associate the Silk Road strictly with routes between China, Turkey, and Europe, it was actually a vast network of trading paths that stretched across Central Asia and into the Caucasus.

Sheki was an important stop along these routes, and the city once had at least two major caravanserais:

  • Yukhari (Upper) Caravanserai
  • Ashaghi (Lower) Caravanserai

Together, they housed hundreds of traders and their goods. The complex reportedly had around 600 rooms, including underground storage areas where merchants could keep a close eye on their valuables.

After falling into disrepair, parts of the Upper Caravanserai were restored in 1988 and converted into guest accommodations – bringing travelers back to this historic space.

Today, the Karvansaray Hotel operates with a limited number of refurbished rooms, along with a traditional tea house and restaurant.

Location: Where Is the Karvansaray Hotel?

The hotel is located right on Sheki’s main street, Mirza Fatali Akhundzada Avenue, sharing its entrance with the historic caravanserai itself.

Getting There:

  • Around 2.6 km from Sheki Bus Station
  • About 800 meters downhill from Sheki Khan’s Palace
  • Taxi cost: roughly 1–3 AZN
  • You can also hop on local bus #22 or similar routes toward the castle

Once you step through the large wooden doors, you’ll enter a dimly lit courtyard with a central fountain – and that’s where the magic begins. Reception is just off to the left.

What It’s Like to Stay Here (Rooms & Facilities)

Let’s set expectations: this is not a luxury hotel. But that’s not why you’re here.

What you do get:

  • Authentic rooms built into brick caravanserai chambers
  • Stunning domed ceilings
  • Access to a beautiful central courtyard
  • A quiet, historic atmosphere that feels frozen in time

Each room opens onto a shared balcony overlooking the courtyard — easily one of the most photogenic spots in Sheki.

Room Features:

  • Two single beds (in most rooms)
  • A small sitting area
  • Private ensuite bathroom
  • Radiator for colder months
  • Clean linens and towels

The bathrooms are a bit dated, but functional — and importantly, there’s hot water.

A Small Heads-Up:

Because of the age of the building, rooms can get a bit chilly at night, especially due to the old brickwork and drafty doors. Pack something warm if you’re visiting outside summer.

Visiting the Caravanserai (Even If You’re Not Staying)

The Upper Caravanserai is open to visitors daily:

  • Hours: 11 AM – 7 PM
  • Visitors can explore the courtyard, but not the upper level (reserved for guests)

Outside these hours, the entire space feels incredibly peaceful — and if you’re staying overnight, you’ll have it almost entirely to yourself.

How to Book the Karvansaray Hotel

Here’s where things get a bit old-school.

  • Standard Room: ~30 AZN (~$17–18 USD)
  • Deluxe Room: 50–120 AZN (~$29–70 USD)

Important Notes:

  • Cash only
  • Payment is made at check-in

Things to Do Near the Karvansaray

One of the best things about staying here is the location — you can explore Sheki entirely on foot.

Nearby Highlights:

  • Sheki Khan’s Palace – a must-see architectural gem
  • Khan’s Mosque and Cemetery – just behind the caravanserai
  • Old town streets with:
    • Silk workshops
    • Pottery shops
    • Antique stores
    • Traditional Sheki halva makers

Wandering the surrounding streets feels like stepping into a different era.

Final Thoughts: Is It Worth Staying Here?

Absolutely — if you value experience over luxury.

The Sheki Karvansaray Hotel isn’t about plush bedding or modern design. It’s about atmosphere, history, and the rare chance to sleep in a place that once hosted Silk Road traders centuries ago.

If you’re planning a trip to Azerbaijan, make sure Sheki is on your itinerary — and try to spend at least one night here. It’s not just a hotel stay, it’s a story you’ll remember long after your trip ends.
