Tampa wasn’t supposed to steal my heart… but it did.
When people think of Florida, they usually picture the neon nightlife of Miami or the theme parks of Orlando. But after just a few days in Tampa, I realised something – this city offers something those places don’t: authenticity.
With nearly 3 million residents across the Tampa Bay area, it may sound big – but by US standards, it feels surprisingly laid-back. I instantly fell in love with its chilled white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, and a skyline that quietly rivals the big cities.
After two whirlwind days in Miami, we hit the road again – this time heading to Tampa, where we’d spend the next 10 days before continuing on to New York.

From Tropical Sunshine to Thunderstorms: Our Arrival in Tampa
The drive from the Florida Keys to Tampa Bay was long – but nothing could have prepared us for what came next.
As we approached the city, the skies turned dark. Within minutes, we were caught in one of the most intense storms I’ve ever witnessed – thunder cracking, rain pounding, visibility near zero. It was both terrifying and unforgettable.
But as quickly as it came, it passed.
And waiting for us on the other side? Family.
We reunited with my extended family, who welcomed us into our villa and instantly made Tampa feel like home. Thanks to them, we weren’t just tourists—we got to experience Tampa like locals.
Best Things to Do in Tampa, Florida (From a Local Perspective)
1. Lettuce Lake Park: Boardwalks, Wildlife & Alligator Spotting
If you’re looking to escape the Florida heat and city buzz, Lettuce Lake Park is the perfect retreat.
Located near the University of South Florida, this hidden gem offers a peaceful break into nature—and for just $2 per car, it’s one of the best-value experiences in Tampa.
We started at the visitor centre and followed the 3,500-foot wooden boardwalk, winding through a shaded hardwood swamp forest. The air felt cooler, the noise disappeared, and suddenly – it didn’t feel like a city at all.
And then came the highlight.
Just off the boardwalk, we spotted a five-foot alligator, casually resting like it owned the place (which, to be fair, it probably did). Lettuce Lake is actually one of the best spots in Tampa to see gators in the wild, so keep your eyes peeled.
At the end of the trail, an observation tower rewards you with panoramic views over the Hillsborough River – definitely bring your camera.

2. Kayaking the Weeki Wachee River: Florida’s Most Magical Waterway
About an hour north of Tampa lies one of the most surreal places I’ve ever seen: Weeki Wachee River.
Kayaking here feels like drifting through a dream.
The water is so clear and vibrant that it genuinely looks like something out of a Disney film—each turn revealing a new shade of emerald or turquoise. Fed by natural springs, the river flows gently toward the Gulf of Mexico, making it ideal for beginners and families.
We spent hours paddling, stopping occasionally to swim, relax, and take it all in. It was really nice just kayaking for a little bit and then taking a dip in the river before kayaking a bit more. I just wanted to make sure I didn’t swim near a manatee because they’re ugly (sorry but its gotta be said).
The river winds through lush forests and mangroves, filled with wildlife and hidden spots where you can swing from ropes or jump off trees into the water. We jumped off the a few trees and swung on a few ropes near the riverbed. When I think of Tampa, these are the sweet memories that come in mind.
That said—be careful.
But guys, if you can’t swim, be extremely cautious – there are some deep water areas in the river. We had an incident where my auntie and mum were in a kayak with all of our bags and electricals (don’t ask why). They were stuck in this current which quickly took them under a tree in the riverbed. They both grabbed onto the tree above their heads to try and stop the kayak moving forwards and then it capsized and flipped. I was sharing a kayak with my father and so I told him to stay in the kayak while I jump in, as he’s also not a very confident swimmer. At this point, I didn’t know my auntie couldn’t swim so I dived in to grab the mobiles, wallets and bags. It was only when I re-surfaced that I saw my cousin swimming over to pick my auntie up. Luckily everyone was fine with just a few scratches here and there. Now we laugh about it but it was scary times guys! Just be cautious…

3. Clearwater Beach: Sunsets, Storms & Unexpected Moments
No trip to Tampa is complete without visiting Clearwater Beach – and trust me, it lives up to the hype.
Soft white sand, calm waters, and a relaxed atmosphere make it feel more “local” than touristy. In fact, this is where my uncle swims at 5am every morning (which I still can’t wrap my head around).
We spent an afternoon sunbathing and swimming, soaking up the Florida sun… until suddenly, the sky had other plans.
Out of nowhere, lightning struck.
We rushed to Pier 60, joining dozens of others taking shelter from the storm. Instead of letting it ruin the moment, we made the most of it—sitting in a circle, playing cards, and laughing while the rain poured outside.
Sometimes, the unexpected moments become the best memories.

4. Downtown Tampa & Riverwalk: Skyline Views Without the Crowds
Downtown Tampa surprised me.
It’s not loud or chaotic—in fact, it’s quite the opposite. But that’s exactly what makes it special.
We spent an evening walking along the Tampa Riverwalk, a scenic 2.5-mile stretch along the Hillsborough River. The skyline reflected beautifully on the water, and the whole area felt calm, clean, and effortlessly modern.
Afterwards, we drove through nearby residential streets – and honestly, the houses were massive. Each one unique, almost like mini mansions with their own personality.
It felt like exploring a completely different side of the city.

5. The Best Part of Tampa? Family
Of course, the real reason this trip meant so much wasn’t just the places – it was the people.
We came to Tampa to visit my uncle and his family, whom I hadn’t seen since Gaza many years ago. Reconnecting with them, sharing stories, laughing together – it made the whole experience infinitely more meaningful.
Tampa gave me more than just great views and activities.
It gave me memories I’ll hold onto for life.

Final Thoughts: Is Tampa Worth Visiting?
Absolutely.
If you’re looking for a Florida destination that combines natural beauty, local charm, and a slower pace of life, Tampa is the perfect choice. It may not shout for attention like Miami or Orlando—but that’s exactly why it stands out.
