Summer in Marmaris – Beaches, Adventure & Culture

Marmaris is one of the most beautiful places I’ve visited. Located in the Muğla Province in south-west Turkey, it’s famous for stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, delicious food, and full-day tours. For adventure seekers, there are also plenty of options for water sports, hiking, and boat trips.

My family and I were after a relaxing Turkish summer holiday, and Marmaris delivered perfectly. It offered something for everyone: my brother could lounge on the beach all day, my sister could eat to her heart’s content, and I could mix in adventure with a bit of relaxation.

🏨 Excellent Yet Affordable 5* Resorts

Accommodation in Marmaris is plentiful, from hostels and apartments to luxurious 5* resorts. We stayed at D-Resort Grand Azur Marmaris, a 5-star hotel just a 15–20 minute walk from central Marmaris and the marina.

Highlights of our stay:

  • Private beach and freshwater pool in a tropical setting
  • Volleyball and activities organised by the entertainment team (which my brother and sister loved!)
  • Five bars and two restaurants, offering delicious buffet and à la carte options
  • Spacious rooms with large beds and private balconies overlooking the ocean
  • Evening entertainment featuring different star acts each night

2026 tip: Many hotels now offer hybrid check-in and contactless options. If traveling with family, request a room on a higher floor for better sea views and less noise from pools.

On a side note, I was also particularly impress with how the hotel dealt with an earthquake we experience on 21st July. Read about my experience here.

🚤 Full-Day Cruise to Dalyan

One of the highlights for our family was a full-day cruise from Marmaris to Dalyan. The day started with snorkeling in the clear blue waters, sunbathing, and a BBQ on the boat. My brother immediately grabbed a snorkel and explored every corner, while my sister couldn’t stop snapping photos of the scenery.

We then switched to a smaller boat to visit Turtle Beach, where we were lucky to spot turtles both in the water and on the sand. I was squealing with excitement, my brother pretended to act cool, and my sister literally danced around in joy.

Next, we cruised along the Dalyan River to see ancient rock-cut tombs. The final adventure of the day was the mud bath, followed by a dip in the thermal pool. My sister laughed so hard she almost slipped, my brother insisted on a second round, and I secretly enjoyed being covered head to toe in warm mud – definitely a highlight!

Tip: Book online with verified operators for safety and availability. Bring swimwear, towels, and a waterproof phone case. If booking locally at the marina, don’t forget to haggle for the best price.

🛁 Turkish Bath (Hammam)

Another must-try in Marmaris is the Turkish bath. My siblings had no idea what they were in for. The whole room ended up soapy and slippery as they slid across the marble, and I was laughing (and facepalming) the entire time.

Tip: Wear a bathing suit if you prefer modesty, bring flip-flops, and book a reputable hammam for the full experience.

🏖️ Beaches & Water Sports

Marmaris has amazing beaches. My brother spent hours lounging and playing volleyball, my sister was snorkeling with delight, and I enjoyed relaxing with a book while occasionally jumping into the waves.

For adventure, you can try:

  • Snorkeling or scuba diving
  • Banana boat rides and jet skiing
  • Paddleboarding or kite surfing

2026 tip: Some beaches now require eco fees to preserve marine life. Always check that operators provide life jackets and well-maintained equipment.

🌅 Evening Promenade & Turkish Ice Cream

The promenade is perfect for an evening stroll. My parents loved walking there after dinner to enjoy the cooler evening breeze. My sister and I couldn’t resist grabbing some Turkish ice cream (Dondurma) – a chewy, mastic-flavored delight. Vendors often put on a playful show tossing and stretching the ice cream before serving!

🏛️ Exploring Marmaris Old Town

The Old Town begins near the Atatürk statue, dedicated to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey. Highlights include:

  • Historic stone architecture and narrow cobbled streets – my sister dragged us into every little shop, while my brother tried to bargain his way to a discount on everything.
  • Shops selling local crafts, spices, and souvenirs (beware of counterfeit goods)
  • The Dancing Fountain, which lights up with music every night around 8:30 PM – my brother was mesmerized, my sister clapped along to the music, and I just admired the architecture.

Tip: Visit the Old Town late afternoon to avoid heat and crowds. Carry cash for markets and small purchases.

✅ Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Dalaman Airport is the closest major airport. Shuttle buses and taxis take ~1 hour to Marmaris.
  • Currency: Turkish Lira (TRY). Credit cards are widely accepted, but cash is useful in markets.
  • Weather: Summer is hot (30–35°C). Pack light clothing, sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses.
  • Safety: Marmaris is generally safe, but watch out for pickpockets in crowded areas.
  • Booking activities: Pre-book popular tours online, especially in July–August.

Marmaris is perfect for families, couples, or adventure seekers. Between relaxing beaches, exciting excursions, delicious food, and a charming Old Town, it has something for everyone.
