In recent years, Hurghada has become one of Egypt’s top beach destinations – thanks to its year-round sunshine, crystal-clear waters, and world-class diving spots.
Having visited both Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada, I’d say Hurghada feels more authentic – and noticeably more affordable.

How We Ended Up in Hurghada (Unexpectedly…)
My family and I actually ended up in Hurghada by accident.
Back in 2011, we travelled to Egypt with the intention of going to the Gaza Strip. However, once we arrived, the border was unexpectedly closed by Israeli and Egyptian authorities – meaning we were stuck in Egypt for two weeks.
It definitely wasn’t the plan, and we would have much rather spent Ramadan at home with family. But instead of dwelling on it, we decided to make the most of the situation – and booked a stay at the Hurghada Marriott Beach Resort.
With a bit of last-minute research, we discovered there was actually plenty to do.
Things to do:
Relax on the Beach
Honestly, one of the best things to do in Hurghada is also the simplest—just relax.
The beaches along the Red Sea are beautiful, and the water is warm, calm, and incredibly clear.
To this day, I still remember how much time we spent just floating in the sea, chatting, and enjoying the moment. Sometimes, those are the best travel memories.
There are also plenty of water sports available if you want something more active.

Take a Submarine Trip in the Red Sea
Since the Red Sea is one of Egypt’s biggest highlights, it’s definitely worth seeing what’s beneath the surface.
If you don’t want to scuba dive, a submarine trip is a great alternative.
We went with Sindbad Submarines, which took us around 22 metres underwater. At one point, a diver swam alongside the submarine to attract fish like wrasse, groupers, and parrotfish—it was such a fun and unique experience.

Ride a Camel
It wouldn’t be a trip to Egypt without a camel ride.
It’s definitely not the most comfortable experience—but it’s fun and gives you a real sense of the desert landscape.

Go Quad Biking in the Desert
We originally booked a quad biking safari mostly for my dad and brother – but it ended up being one of the best experiences of the trip.
We were taken out into the desert by minibus, shown how to use the ATVs, and then set off in a convoy across the dunes.
Driving through the Egyptian desert, spotting a desert mirage, and just being surrounded by endless sand was incredible.

Visit a Bedouin Camp
After the quad biking, we stopped at a Bedouin camp.
We learned a bit about their way of life, watched the sunset, and then stayed for dinner.
The evening ended with traditional music and dancing around a campfire – which made the whole experience feel really special.

Explore El Dahar
If you want to see a more local side of Hurghada, head to El Dahar (the Old Town).
This area feels completely different from the resort zones. You’ll find traditional الأسواق (souks), local restaurants, and shops selling everything from spices and leather goods to shisha pipes.
It’s a great place to experience a more authentic side of the city.

Where We Stayed
We stayed at the Hurghada Marriott Beach Resort, and it was perfect for a family trip.
It felt luxurious but was still affordable, and having direct beach access made everything so easy.
🧭 Practical Tips for Visiting Hurghada (2026)
- Best time to visit: October–April for comfortable temperatures
- Summer: Very hot, but manageable thanks to sea breezes
- Currency: Egyptian Pound (EGP)
- Getting around: Taxis and hotel transfers are easiest
- Activities: Book through reputable hotels or licensed operators
- Safety: Generally safe in resort areas, but always stay aware
💡 Tip: Many resorts are all-inclusive, but it’s worth leaving the hotel at least once to explore the local culture.
✨ Final Thoughts
Hurghada wasn’t part of our original plan—but it ended up being such a memorable part of the trip.
Between the Red Sea, desert adventures, and relaxed atmosphere, it offered a completely different side of Egypt.
Sometimes, the unexpected detours turn out to be the best parts of a journey.
