Tips for Traveling with Kids

Traveling as a family can be one of the most rewarding experiences – but it also comes with its challenges. Over the years, I’ve travelled with a baby in the UK and abroad, and I’ve learned a few tricks that make trips smoother, less stressful, and far more enjoyable for everyone. Whether you’re heading off on a weekend getaway or a long-haul adventure, these tips will help you stay organized, prepared, and ready for fun!

🧳 1. Pack Smart, Not Heavy

Kids require a lot of stuff, but overpacking can make travel stressful.

Essentials to always include:

  • Snacks & water bottles (avoid hangry meltdowns!)
  • Favourite toys or comfort items
  • Extra clothes (think spills, sand, and weather changes)
  • Basic first aid (plasters, antiseptic wipes, pain relief)
  • Wet wipes and hand sanitizer

Pro tip: Packing cubes are a game changer for keeping everyone’s clothes organized. You can even have one cube per child, making it easy to find what you need without turning the suitcase upside down.

✈️ 2. Choose the Right Flights & Times

  • Direct flights are usually worth the extra money to avoid connections, especially with little ones.
  • Early morning or bedtime flights often work well — kids may sleep through most of the journey.
  • Check-in online the night before to reduce airport stress.

We’ve found that bringing a small backpack with snacks, colouring books, and headphones keeps kids entertained on long flights. My siblings used to fight over screen time — now we each have tablets or a Kindle for peace!

🏨 3. Accommodation Matters

Look for family-friendly hotels or self-catering apartments with:

  • Kids’ pools or play areas
  • Kitchen facilities to prepare meals
  • Laundry facilities (trust me, this saves space in your luggage!)

When booking hotels, I use Booking.com and also check the hotel website directly — sometimes they have free upgrades or family perks like free cots or late checkouts.

🎢 4. Plan Activities with Flexibility

Kids can get tired quickly, so avoid packing your day full of back-to-back attractions.

  • Schedule downtime at the hotel or a nearby park
  • Mix sightseeing with playground visits or beach breaks
  • Consider half-day tours instead of full-day tours

On one trip to Marmaris, my brother just wanted to chill on the beach, my sister wanted to eat all day, and I wanted some activities — we split the day so everyone got a bit of what they wanted, and it worked perfectly!

🍎 5. Keep Snacks & Hydration Close

  • Always carry water bottles
  • Pack healthy, travel-friendly snacks: granola bars, fruit, crackers
  • Keep some treats for long waits at airports or train stations

Even a small snack can prevent a meltdown during transit — and keep everyone happy for longer!

🎒 6. Entertainment On-the-Go

  • Tablets or a portable DVD player for long journeys
  • Headphones for each child (avoid fights over one pair)
  • Colouring books, stickers, or small travel games
  • Download movies or shows in advance for offline use

For long train rides in the UK, we bring a backpack with each child’s favourites — it keeps them engaged and gives parents some breathing space!

🏥 7. Health & Safety

  • Pack a first-aid kit including any prescription meds
  • Bring sun protection for sunny destinations: hats, sunscreen, UV swimwear
  • Keep a copy of health insurance documents handy
  • Teach older kids emergency contact info

🚗 8. Travel Gear That Makes Life Easier

  • Stroller or buggy: collapsible and lightweight
  • Baby carrier: perfect for hikes or crowded attractions
  • Travel cot or pack ‘n’ play if not provided by the hotel
  • Car seat: check regulations for international destinations

We never leave home without our collapsible stroller — it fits in taxis and on planes easily, and my little one naps comfortably while we explore!

📝 9. Research & Prepare

  • Look for kid-friendly attractions before you travel
  • Check reviews from other families
  • Plan for rest stops during road trips
  • Find playgrounds or parks near hotels for quick downtime

💡 10. Embrace Flexibility

Finally, the golden rule: travel with kids requires patience and flexibility. Some days won’t go as planned — a nap might take longer, or an attraction may close early. Go with the flow and focus on creating memories rather than ticking off every item on your itinerary.

Traveling with kids is a different kind of adventure, but with preparation, organization, and a few tricks, it can be fun, memorable, and surprisingly easy!
