The Ultimate Orlando Theme Park Guide: Our Florida Road Trip from Miami to Orlando

There’s no doubt that Florida is one of the best road trip destinations in the US. With its endless stretches of sandy beaches, vibrant cities, and the tropical beauty of the Keys, it’s made for exploring by car.

Hiring a car is not only the most affordable way to get around—it also gives you the freedom to experience Florida properly, at your own pace.

Since we have family based in Tampa, we drove from Miami to Tampa before continuing on to Orlando. We stayed in a villa apartment (kindly organised by my uncle), which made the whole experience feel even more relaxed and homely.

Planning Your Orlando Itinerary: What to Know Before You Go

Orlando is home to some of the world’s most iconic theme parks—but here’s the reality:
you cannot do everything in one trip.

There are simply too many parks, rides, and attractions.

Instead, the key is to prioritise. Choose a mix that suits your travel style—whether that’s thrill rides, water parks, or family-friendly experiences—and plan your days around that.

For our trip, we chose:

  • Aquatica Orlando
  • Busch Gardens Tampa Bay
  • Magic Kingdom Park
  • SeaWorld Orlando
  • Universal Studios Florida

We also made sure to leave time for shopping (because… priorities).

Aquatica Orlando: The Perfect Cool-Down

The Florida heat hit hard, so naturally, it felt like the perfect day for a water park.

Aquatica had such a fun, youthful energy—music playing throughout the park, plenty of exciting slides, and a really lively atmosphere. It was the perfect way to cool off and break up the intensity of theme park days.

The only downside? A completely random thunderstorm rolled in during the afternoon (very on-brand for Florida), cutting our day slightly short.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay: Florida’s Most Underrated Theme Park

Although technically located in Tampa, Busch Gardens is close enough to include in your Orlando itinerary – and it’s absolutely worth it.

I hadn’t even heard of it before this trip, but it ended up being one of my favourites.

What makes it unique is the combination of a theme park and a zoo. It genuinely caters to everyone – thrill seekers, animal lovers, and even foodies.

The park itself is beautifully designed and easy to navigate, with lots of greenery and open space.

Top rides I loved:

  • Cobra’s Curse – a spinning coaster that moves forwards and backwards
  • Montu – an intense Egyptian-themed roller coaster

It’s easily one of the best parks in Florida for adrenaline rides.

Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World: Pure Disney Magic ✨

I had previously been to Disneyland Paris as a teenager – but Magic Kingdom Park is on a completely different scale.

It’s bigger, more immersive, and honestly… more magical.

We fully embraced the experience (no shame here). Yes, I queued over 30 minutes to hug Tinkerbell and Mickey Mouse – and yes, I dragged my younger sister along as an excuse.

The highlight of the day?
The Happily Ever After fireworks show over Cinderella Castle.

If you’re planning to watch it:

  • Arrive early (crowds start building from around 7pm)
  • Find a good viewing spot
  • Stay until the end—it’s absolutely worth it

I’m a sucker for fireworks, and this completely lived up to the hype.

SeaWorld Orlando: A Mix of Education & Entertainment

We visited SeaWorld Orlando mainly because my mum loves marine life—and it turned out to be far more enjoyable than I expected.

The standout for me was the killer whale show (One Ocean), but I also loved the smaller, interactive experiences:

  • Touching stingrays
  • Seeing turtles and sea lions up close
  • Walking through the penguin habitat (Antarctica House was incredible!)

There’s a strong educational element throughout the park, which makes it great for both kids and adults.

We also visited with my cousin Noor, who gave us extra fun facts along the way—always a bonus having a personal tour guide!

Universal Studios Florida: A Must for Movie Lovers

We spent a full day at Universal Studios Florida, entering through the lively Universal CityWalk.

This was my dad’s favourite park—he’s a huge film fan, so it was right up his street.

For me, the highlight was The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. The attention to detail in Diagon Alley is incredible, and the Escape from Gringotts ride is one of the best I’ve experienced.

We visited in September (off-season), which meant shorter queues—a huge win.

Family favourite ride:
Fast & Furious (this one was a hit with everyone!)

Shopping in Orlando: Designer Bargains & Outlet Finds

You can’t leave Florida without doing a bit of shopping—especially if you love designer brands.

We headed to the Orlando International Premium Outlets after Aquatica and stayed until closing (10pm… we take shopping seriously).

You’ll find brands like:

  • Kate Spade
  • Coach
  • Michael Kors
  • DKNY
  • Nike
  • Levi’s

I picked up a few gifts for my fiancé and his family—and of course, treated myself too.

Pro tip:
Head to Guest Services and sign up for additional discount vouchers before you start shopping.

Final Thoughts: Is Orlando Worth It?

Absolutely—but only if you plan it right.

Orlando can feel overwhelming with so many options, but once you narrow it down to your priorities, it becomes an unforgettable experience.

From world-class roller coasters and magical Disney moments to interactive marine life experiences and outlet shopping, it really does offer something for everyone.
