I don’t usually talk about my 9–5 job here, but I work for a political consultancy in London, and in May 2018, we had the incredible opportunity to host and attend the 16th International Electoral Symposium in Troia, just outside Lisbon. This prestigious event brought together high-ranking election officials from around the world to share insights, showcase election solutions, and explore best practices in election modernization and the latest technology trends.
During the symposium, we addressed topics that are shaping the future of elections, including:
- Current and future electoral technologies
- Youth voter participation
- Elections and disabilities
- Gender equality and political empowerment of women
- Building transparency and accountability in elections
- The impact of training in the electoral process
- Biometric enrolment, identification, and verification solutions
- The value of the vote – equality in the weight of each vote
- Security seals, labels, indelible ink, and ballots

I

It was a hectic few days—2 a.m. meetings, 6 a.m. wake-ups, and a constant push to make sure everything ran smoothly. Despite the whirlwind schedule, we stayed at the Troia Design Hotel, which was absolutely stunning. I even managed to squeeze in a quick dip in the infinity pool amidst the chaos—it was worth it!

One of the most memorable nights was when the Electoral Commission of Portugal hosted a traditional show and three-course dinner for us and the visiting officials. There was folk dancing, live music, Fado singing, and incredible food—it was truly a night to remember.

After all the work was done, the Electoral Commission treated us to a tour of Lisbon. I had already explored the city the weekend before, but it was a wonderful opportunity to see it again in a different context. The highlight for me was lunch at the hill-top monastery, Convento da Arrábida, a place I’ve dedicated an entire post to because I absolutely loved it.

Overall, this experience was a unique blend of professional learning, cultural immersion, and a touch of leisure—a reminder that even the busiest trips can create unforgettable memories.
