If you’re visiting the UAE, a day trip to Abu Dhabi is an absolute must.
While many travellers base themselves in Dubai, the UAE’s capital offers a completely different atmosphere. Abu Dhabi feels calmer, more traditional, and slightly less flashy than its glamorous neighbour.
During my visit, I spent a full day exploring some of the city’s most famous attractions—from thrilling water rides to world-class art museums and one of the most breathtaking mosques in the world.
If you only have one day in Abu Dhabi, here are three unforgettable places you shouldn’t miss.
- 1. Yas Waterworld: The Ultimate Water Park Adventure
- 2. Louvre Abu Dhabi: Art from Across Civilisations
- 3. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: Abu Dhabi’s Most Breathtaking Landmark

1. Yas Waterworld: The Ultimate Water Park Adventure
Our first stop of the day was Yas Waterworld, located on Yas Island.
I absolutely love water parks, but this one was on a completely different scale. Yas Waterworld features over 40 rides and attractions, making it one of the largest and most exciting water parks in the Middle East.
Naturally, I wanted to ease into the day by relaxing on the artificial beach and dipping my feet in the water. It was peaceful, calm, and exactly the kind of gentle start I had in mind.
My cousin, however, had other ideas.
For some reason he thought the best way to start the morning was by going straight to the park’s most terrifying slides — Jebel Drop and Hamlool’s Humps. Looking back, I’m still surprised I let him talk me into it. At one point I’m fairly certain my back wasn’t even touching the slide anymore.
After my heart rate eventually returned to something resembling normal, we continued exploring the park and tried some of the other rides.
We even stopped halfway along the river to watch a traditional pearl diving demonstration. My cousin explained how pearl diving was once the main industry in the region, long before oil transformed the UAE’s economy. In fact, archaeological evidence suggests pearl diving in the Gulf dates back more than 7,000 years.
Before the oil boom, the economy of the region relied heavily on pearls, fishing, and maritime trade.
2. Louvre Abu Dhabi: Art from Across Civilisations
Next, we drove to Saadiyat Island to visit the incredible Louvre Abu Dhabi.
I had been really excited to visit ever since the museum opened in 2017. Designed by renowned French architect Jean Nouvel, the building itself is a masterpiece.
The museum’s enormous silver dome is made from thousands of geometric patterns, creating what Nouvel calls a “rain of light” effect as sunlight filters through the structure.
Inside, the museum houses artwork from major institutions including:
- Centre Pompidou
- Musée Rodin
- Château de Versailles
- Musée d’Orsay
Each gallery takes visitors through different eras of human history, showing how cultures and civilizations have influenced each other across time.
One thing I quickly learned: try not to compare it too much to Louvre Museum in Paris where Mona Lisa reigns supreme.
Instead, the Abu Dhabi Louvre focuses on global storytelling through art, connecting different cultures and historical periods in a really thoughtful way.
My cousin’s friend Vanine joined us halfway through the visit. As a photographer, she absolutely loved capturing the architecture and artworks throughout the museum.
3. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: Abu Dhabi’s Most Breathtaking Landmark
Before heading home, we made one final stop at the breathtaking Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.
Completed in 2007, the mosque was commissioned by the UAE’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who is also buried on the site.
The mosque can accommodate over 40,000 worshippers, making it one of the largest mosques in the world.
Every part of the mosque is incredibly detailed, but my favourite feature has to be the marble columns decorated with hand-painted floral designs. Each one is unique, and the leaf details on the crowns of the columns are made using real gold.
The mosque also contains:
- 82 domes
- massive Swarovski crystal chandeliers
- and the largest hand-knotted carpet in the world, covering the main prayer hall.
Standing inside the mosque, surrounded by marble, gold detailing, and intricate craftsmanship, was truly unforgettable.
