When we were traveling through Ljubljana, nearly every traveler we met told us the same thing: “If you’re here, you absolutely must visit Lake Bled.” After hearing that recommendation repeatedly, Hannah and I decided we couldn’t leave Slovenia without seeing it for ourselves.
So on day three of our trip, we set out early for what would turn out to be one of the most beautiful day trips of our interrailing adventure.
- Getting to Lake Bled from Ljubljana
- Walking Around Lake Bled
- Rowing on Lake Bled
- Views of Bled Castle
- Why Lake Bled Is Worth the Trip
Getting to Lake Bled from Ljubljana
We started the morning by stopping at a supermarket to pick up a very budget-friendly breakfast—cheese, crackers, and croissants—planning to enjoy it by the lake.
From there, we walked just over ten minutes to the Ljubljana Bus Station near the city center. Buses to Lake Bled depart frequently, and we boarded ours from platform 7. The journey took about 1.5 hours, winding through Slovenia’s lush countryside. Since we were traveling with an Interrail pass, the ticket was included, which made the trip even better for our limited travel budget.
The best part? The bus stop in Bled is only a two-minute walk from the lake, so within minutes of arriving, we were standing in front of one of Europe’s most picturesque landscapes.
Walking Around Lake Bled
Once we reached the path that circles the lake, we turned right and began what is known as the Lake Bled loop walk. The trail around the lake is roughly 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) and takes about three hours to complete at a relaxed pace.
In theory, that sounds simple. In reality, Hannah and I stopped about every ten minutes.
Between the crystal-clear water, views of the surrounding Julian Alps, and countless photo opportunities, it was impossible not to pause constantly. Eventually we found the perfect spot to sit down and enjoy our supermarket breakfast while soaking in the scenery.
Lake Bled is famous for its emerald water, fairytale setting, and the tiny island sitting in the middle of the lake. It’s no surprise it’s considered one of Slovenia’s most iconic destinations.
Rowing on Lake Bled
One of the highlights of the day was renting a small rowing boat and heading out onto the lake. Paddling across the calm water gave us a completely different perspective of the landscape.
In the center of the lake sits Bled Island, home to the beautiful Church of the Assumption, a historic pilgrimage church dating back to the 17th century. Tradition says that if you ring the church bell and make a wish, it may come true.
Whether or not that legend works, the experience of rowing toward the island definitely felt magical.
Views of Bled Castle
While out on the lake, we also had incredible views of Bled Castle, perched dramatically on a 130-meter cliff above the water. The medieval castle dates back to the 11th century and is one of the oldest castles in Slovenia.
From the lake, the castle looks like something straight out of a storybook—towering above the forest and reflected in the water below.
Why Lake Bled Is Worth the Trip
Spending the day at Lake Bled turned out to be one of the highlights of our entire trip through Slovenia. Between the peaceful lakeside walk, rowing across the water, and enjoying breakfast with one of the best views in Europe, it felt like stepping into a fairytale.
If you’re visiting Ljubljana, a day trip to Lake Bled is absolutely essential. It’s easy to reach, incredibly scenic, and packed with unforgettable moments.
